4 Principles of Chado
和 Wa: Harmony, the ultimate ideal
Wa is the positive interaction between the guest and the host, nature, tea utensils, and life itself, creating peace.
敬 Kei: Respect, extending a pure heart
Kei is the ability to understand and accept everyone; the act of respecting everything and being humble enough to be respected. The guests and host think of each other with sharing and consideration because all are of the same rank in the tearoom, including the utensils.
清 Sei: Purity, the essence of tea training
Sei is treating oneself and others with an open heart. The pure heart helps to realize harmony and respect, achieved by the natural cleanliness of the tea garden or clothes.
寂 Jaku: Tranquility, where selflessness is achieved
Jaku is the goal of tea mastery because it is when the endless possibilities of life are realized. A true master reaches jaku to put all the principles together to begin life again with a fresh and enlightened heart.
